Move In Playlist

Well, today I'm heading to school for my senior year (which I'm refusing to acknowledge at this point). Besides a minor existential crisis, this means that today also includes a 6 hour drive and a few hours of hauling boxes due to a major case of chronic overpacking. So what's the best way to get through mindless hours on the road and jelly arms? Music obviously. Here's some tunes I've been listening to recently that are prepped to carry me through day 1 of senior year. Click through the image or the link below to follow this Spotify playlist for yourself and listen along with me!

Ahh can you believe school is already starting back up?! Crazy! What are you listening to?

5 Reasons: Why Summer Internships are a MUST!

Today is my last day at my internship for this summer and it's definitely bitter sweet. It's also bitter sweet to look at this day as my last day as an intern hopefully ever. Now a rising senior in college, I've spent every summer since freshman year in high school interning for companies. I acknowledge this is pretty nerdy but I am admittedly a go-go-go kind of person who likes to be working and creative so for me, I've found internships to be incredibly rewarding. As I've continued year after year, I've gotten to see my own evolution as a working adult. (Scary!) But it really is truly incredible to see all of my previous experiences and the skills I've learned, both in internships and in the classroom, come full circle and apply in ways I never would have imagined. So while it may seem like a sacrifice to give away some of those precious, pressure-free days of summer, I have 5 reasons why it is absolutely worth it!

1. Build and develop your skills! // Throwing yourself into the work environment is the best way to start to develop practical and necessary skills for your future! My first week in my first internship I was learning how to cold call, code website pages and even file financial reports, all things I would have never been able to learn outside of the work environment. You also get the chance to apply knowledge that you've learned in the classroom and see the ways that these lessons apply to the real world.

2. Learn what you love, or more importantly, learn what you don't love! // Internships allow you to figure out what you like without the pressure of a sense of "career permanence". You can start to determine what industries you like to work in, what areas of business you enjoy or even the specific tasks that you find most interesting. This has been one of my biggest take aways from my wide array of interning experiences. One summer, I found myself interning in an industry that I wasn't exactly enthralled with but I realized that I loved all of the advertising and promotional projects that I was thrown every once in a while. I kept working hard through that summer and the next year looked for a job in the marketing sector and I couldn't have been happier, with both experiences! If it weren't for the first internship, I would have never learned how much I liked marketing and now I get to do it every day!

3. Get the most out of your summer! // It can seem like a sacrifice to give away some of your much deserved pool-time but for me, I've learned that summer internships actually help me take advantage of my summers. Internships force you to balance your time between work and play and I've found that it makes me much more productive! On my off-days I still get up in the morning, eat breakfast, take a run and truly start every day with a purpose rather than taking any of those precious sunny hours for granted. If you're truly worried, balance your summer with a part-time internship and get the best of both worlds!

4. Land hard to reach jobs! // It can be almost impossible to land an internship with a big name brand or an international company, but internships are your glimmer of hope! A lot of companies may not be hiring but many are very open to bringing a driven and enthusiastic intern on board. While you most likely won't be getting the benefit of a consistent paycheck, you're getting unparalleled experience and the chance of a lifetime!

5. Prep for your future! // It's all about experience and the only way to gain work experience, well, is to work! The easiest way to get your foot in the door is with an internship and many can result in the opportunity to continue climbing on up the ladder! Even if you don't see yourself in the company longterm, think about what you're gaining along the way: the great skills you're adding to your resume, all of your new networking contacts and even references for future job opportunities!

Are you interning this summer? What do you think about summer internships? Are they worth it?

The "Good' In Goodbye

Mondays are rough. Mondays are especially rough when you're having to say goodbye to your best friend for more months that you would like to count. There is always the inevitable packing after the end of the fall semester. Most students are packing their bags for a trip home for break while other students are packing their rooms to take off across the pond next semester. Studying abroad is an absolutely amazing opportunity that comes with exotic foods, beautiful architecture, lively discotheques, and countless memories but if there is one drawback, it stems from your semester of independence away from friends and family. This is a wonderful thing, and one of the reasons that I would really encourage any student to pursue traveling abroad, however the initial goodbye is not so equally wonderful.

After being in a long distance relationship, I'd like to think I've become a pro at goodbyes, but if I've learned anything, it's that for those who truly matter, the goodbye is never easy. We're not expected to be good at goodbyes, and we're not expected to all handle them the same. You're allowed to freeze up, you're allowed to be silent, and you're allowed to cry like you just got socked in the stomach. It's okay.

For those saying goodbye before a semester abroad, there are a few things to remember. First, remember the reason that saying goodbye is so difficult. Friends and family, and the memories that make goodbyes so bittersweet, will be there forever but also remember that we cannot wait to pick back up right where we left off. Second, find comfort in the technology of the 21st century. With Skype, Facebook, iMessage and Snapchat you are only a button away. The phone works both ways and communication never has to be an issue. Staying up till 4 in the morning to FaceTime will never be a burden. Third, remember that your friends and family will be waiting for you with open arms to hear the stories of your travels and see the photos of every Spanish churro you ate. School will be here waiting for you in the Fall, and your roommates will be more than ready to knock off the rest of your tasks on your college bucket list. Lastly, don't let the goodbye overshadow the amazing experiences you are about to encounter. Everyone truly is excited for your adventures and cannot wait to see where you will go in this world.

So yes, goodbyes are the worst but I would say that there is some "good" in goodbye and it is this. In saying goodbye, we discover how truly lucky we are to have people who are hard to say goodbye to. And I'm lucky that today's goodbye was a hard one. So for my best friend leaving next semester I urge you to take an unreasonable amount of photographs and never forget the pure joy that comes from receiving a postcard. I can't wait to hear about your exotic travels, European men and scroll through Instagram photos of food in the air. I already can't wait to see you in five months in Europe.

Only goodbye for now,
Emily

Pause: I'm Living in Milan?!

A few weeks ago I wrote a post {here} about going for your dreams even if they sound far-fetched. A little while after I wrote this I got some big news, good news but big, and it was one of those moments that really stops you in your tracks. I made a big step towards my dreams for the future and I'm coming to the conclusion that even though it sounds cheesy, everything I said in the post really is true. Sometimes you just have to jump in and go for it. Honestly, most of the time it will fail but those times that they pay off are unbelievably magical. I've laid a few hints around E&D about my plans in my post about applying for internships {here} and relentless wanderlust {here} but this past week all of these things came together.

So what's the big news? Let's start at the beginning. Recently, I applied for a scholarship provided by my school that would fund an internship abroad, anywhere in the world, for the entire summer. Historically, my school has sent students to the same cities with many of the same companies. I started writing my application for one of these programs but in the middle of it,  I figured if I was applying for something so far-fetched anyways then I might as well go all in. I decided to throw in all of the cards and take a risk. I wanted to ask for my ultimate dream, many people's ultimate dream, knowing that I was possibly diminishing my chances for the scholarship. I applied to intern in Milan for a fashion creative agency. Crazy, I know.

It was risky.  Honestly, as soon as I turned in the application I regretted it and told myself to start forgetting about it because I was sure it was impossible. Fast track a few weeks to last Thursday. I finally got the much dreaded email but, here's the good news,  I've never been more blown away in my life. It paid off. I picked the ultimate dream, working in the fashion industry in Milan, and now I'm headed there this summer. I threw in all of the chips and, holy crap, I'm going to be living in Milan!

It's been pretty neat to see the culmination of all of my hardwork and right now, I'm having a blast seeing how my life is unfolding. It all does pay off. Keep working your butt off and amazing things will happen. It just comes to show that one of my favorite quotes really is true: the harder you work, the luckier you get. I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that Emily and Dot will be written out of Milan this summer but I couldn't be happier.

Life is good,
Emily

Easy and Cute Halloween Costumes!

Whoop whoop! Tomorrow is Halloween! This holiday has always been one of my favorites. Who doesn't love a chance to dress up?! My only problem with Halloween is that the costumes can get a little risqué, especially on a college campus, and to be honest, I'm not about that. Flashback to Mean Girls and the quote, "In girl world, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it." Well to be totally honest, here are my thoughts on that: False.

Just because it's Halloween it still doesn't give you an opportunity to dress any more raunchy than you would normally. I will never truly understand the logic on that. What I like to opt for are easy DIY costumes that are memorable and cute! This year I'm going as Wednesday Addams, Madeline and then for a group costume I am the white rabbit alongside the Red Queen and Alice! Here are some other ideas that are both easy and cute! Just use some of your clothes you already have in your closet or throw on some fun makeup!

  •  Burglar
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Mary Poppins
  • Where's Waldo
  • Lumberjack
  • Scarecrow
  • Flight Attendant
  • Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz
  • Jackie O
  • Your favorite 90's tv show character!

What are you dressing up as for Halloween?

I'm Going Home, I'm Going Home

This weekend starts my Fall Break and it really couldn't have fallen at a better time. I've been in Memphis now for three months straight and to say that I'm really itching to go home is an understatement. The campus bubble is real. As much as I love my college, my classes and my roommates sometimes you just need a break from your everyday routine and scenery. I am so ready to get on the road and head back home. It's such a treat to get to go home and take a few days to relax. At this point a 7 hour car ride is nothing compared to vegging on the couch and some home cooked meals. My bags are packed, my playlist is ready, my snacks have been purchased and my car has a full tank of gas.  I'm so thankful to have finished my midterms early so I'm heading on the road early this morning to add a few extra days to my mini break. So so ready to see those Kentucky fences.

Productive Study Breaks to Survive Midterms!

Midterms can be incredibly long, grueling and truly just really exhausting. Its tough to stay focused and determined throughout these few weeks. Yes, of course most of your time needs to be spent in the library diligently studying and writing papers however it is also important to give yourself a break once in a while. Not only does this keep you sane, but it also keeps you focused on your work for longer periods of time if you allow yourself these moments of rest. Here are some productive breaks that I usually take.

What do you do to give yourself a break from studying?

How I'm Surviving Midterms

My Midterm Survival Kit

Midterms can seriously feel like they just drag on and on. Now that I'm on week number 3, with Fall Break looming just a few days away, it's super easy to get burnt out. Countless nights spent in the library till horrifying hours in the night morning are starting to get old. Luckily I do have some tried and true tricks up my sleeve to keep me going.

Snacks // This is a big one for me. The combination of boredom and long nights always makes me hungry so it's important for me to have some low calorie munchies around. One of my favorites is listed above. Each bag only has 120 calories and the bag comes with a large quantity of little rice snacks so I feel like I'm getting full while I'm eating it. I also like to munch on grapes, goldfish and dehydrated apples!

Water // Constantly sipping on water helps to fight the inevitable munchies but it also keeps me awake, alert and slightly less bored with my studies. I find that Camelbaks are the perfect size and also help to avoid way less spills than an open Nalgene with textbooks around!

Gum // Through a few years of perfecting my Midterms I've learned that I'm way more productive with gum. It keeps me a little more focused and another plus, helps fight the munchies!

Patagonia // Our library is always freezing so the best way to keep from shivering and getting distracted is to make sure I have plenty of layers. My patagonia is always by my side to either use as a blanket or throw it on over some Norts. Don't waste time walking back and forth from your dorm room because you need some warmer clothes! Bring your layers with you!

Headphones // These Paul Frank SkullCandy earphones are my favorite! Listening to music helps me stay focused on the work that I'm doing and last a little longer on those long nights. You can typically catch me listening to Dave Matthews, Elton John or Ben Rector while I'm studying.

Agenda // My agenda keeps me on track through these long weeks. You never want to have a test or project sneak up on you, especially through Midterms so stay on the ball and write everything down!

Is anyone else on their Midterms grind right now? What do you do to stay focused?

Gameday Girls Link-Up!

Woo hoo it is the best time of year: Football season. Being from Lexington, Kentucky I will always be an SEC girl at heart living for Saturday afternoon tailgates with music blaring, the grill fired up and a cat paw tattoo on my cheek. Game days in the south are definitely an experience! It's such a great time seeing family and friends excited for the festivities and it's an even greater excuse to dress up!

I keep my eye out all year for blue dresses for the UK games and red and black dresses for football games while I'm at school! In any SEC town there are always countless boutiques filled with solid dresses in the hometown school's colors! Although my school's football team isn't as much as a focus like it would be at a large state school we still like to get dressed up for games! I always try to keep a look out for unique dresses like {this enlarged red herringbone dress} to stand out a little bit on those Saturdays! When all else fails, a simple black dress with your school color's accessory always works! Scarves for the win!

For me, the go-to shoes are a pair of boots whether that's riding boots or cowboy boots or sometimes even Hunters. Tailgating fields are usually super muddy and there's no point in ruining a pair of wedges or having muddy toes! Pick something comfortable that you can walk around in all day and you don't mind getting a little messy!

A cute dress, cowboy boots and your sorority pin! Looks like you're ready to go! Here's a picture from our Homecoming tailgate this past weekend with some other KDs! Saturday's in fall will always be my favorite!

This post links back to Corbin's blog {The Classy South}! Check out all of the other girls' game day looks on her post!

What does your school typically wear for football games?

Am.bi.tion.

I'm really starting this week off on the right foot. Well, maybe with a little bit less sleep than I should but otherwise I'm super driven on this usually extra-draggy Tuesday. Last night I stayed up researching internships for this summer. There's so much time between then and now but it's never too early to get on the ball with these things. And you know what? There's no better feeling than feeling on the ball

It's so easy to get overwhelmed with classes, homework, and activities but having those moments when you're on top of everything is truly a gift. I wrote a post a few weeks ago about {setting goals for a new semester}. For me, this is where a lot of my drive and ambition comes from. Knowing that I have these great plans for the future keeps me on track when I need a little extra umph.

What keeps you all working hard?

P.S. Fun fact, I made this image as a background for my computer. It looks great fit to screen or also centered with a white background!

#FridayFind: Frat Boys Shake It Off!

This Friday Find has made me smile all week. Some Delta Sig boys from Transylvania University in my hometown made a Lip Dub to T-Swift's Shake It Off and it's got the girls swooning! This viral vid was executed so perfectly and apparently it only took them two takes! Here's to making you smile on Friday! Hope your weekend is a great one!

Recap: I Love My Sorority Sisters

This past weekend was a busy one indeed. It was the final weekend of Rush and that every sorority girl dreams about, Bid Day.

Rush can be a stressful process from both sides. Picking out the perfect dresses, navigating your way through countless conversations with strangers and having the pressure to pick one house can be tough.  From the other side it's hours of practicing skits and songs, ironing your matching button downs, studying up on every statistic of your philanthropy and making sure that you put your absolute best foot forward. But here's the thing: when you're in an amazing house surrounded by women that you absolutely love being around and truly look up to, those long days become the weekends that you'll always remember. The nightly dance parties that happen after the door closes for the final time, the embarrassing amount of pizzas consumed and the delirious giggle-fests that result after hours of Rush parties in the house are the memories that I'll never forget.

The Greek system is constantly the focus of many negative comments however I can confidently say that joining Kappa Delta was one of the best decisions I've made since coming to college. I get to be constantly surrounded by strong, beautiful and amazingly confident women on a daily basis. I have had amazing experiences working hands-on with our philanthropies. I am given the opportunity to lead the chapter through my role on council, something I would have never thought I would have taken on as a freshman, but has come to be one of the most rewarding parts of my experience.

I get the chance to come home to five other KD roommates every night. I'm so lucky to have these ladies in my life who are nothing short of hilarious, beautiful, supportive and inspirational. I have a giant sorority family that loves me no matter what and I know that at the end of the day these relationships that I've made in this house are going to last forever.

There will always be that element of Greek life that I can never explain. It's more than just formals, swaps, sisterhood events and philanthropies. There's an inexplainable bond that you have with your sisters and you can't truly feel it until you're on the inside. It might be cheesy and it might be cliche but it's true: I love my sorority and I can't imagine my time at school without it.

What a great weekend it was.

P.S. What do you all think of the Greek system?

Just a Little Hump Day Inspo!

Just a little inspiration for this hump day!

I can't believe that with only my fourth day of classes I am this swamped. I mean, absolutely swamped. I thrive off the energy but (whoo!) they weren't lying when they said Junior year was the busiest! I promise once these initial hectic weeks begin to die down I'll have thoughtful blog posts back up and running! Until then, enjoy this hump day and may the rest of your week be solidly downhill from here!

Time to take down this to-do list and punch today in the face!

Taking the Time to Make Goals

Just like I said in my post yesterday, with a new school year comes a lot of new and exciting things to be happy about. Maybe it's your newly declared major, your sorority is gearing up for Rush, you have the best roommate, a newly stocked closet of back to school clothes or maybe you're simply refreshed after a great summer and ready to get back to the grind! No matter what it is, with all of these fun and exciting things swirling around it's so easy to get distracted from the reason that we actually pay this ridiculous amount in tuition and the reason that we're all here: school.

I'm guilty of always having too many things on my plate but I truly do strive off that constant hectic energy however with having so many things constantly on my to-do list I need goals and priorities to keep everything in check. I sat down and brainstormed a little bit after the end of my first day of classes and tried to outline what I really wanted out of this semester. Whether you're in college, high school, or even graduated, taking the time to step back is always important.

I always start first with: What do I want? Then go from there:
What do I want out of my social life this year?
Out of my academic life?
Out of my personal health and exercise?
Out of my extra curricular activities?
Out of my blog?

I like to split up all of my time commitments and really put them in a box to determine my return on investment. I know it's the business major coming out in me, but I always try to make sure that the time, effort and overall stress that I'm putting into these activities is returning what I want or at least what I need. Last semester did you put too much time into a club and in the end were still unhappy with your results or did you put too much time into a sport that it began to run into your other priorities like school, or even sleep?!

With the start of a new year, it's the perfect time to realign all these things and really start off on the right foot. There's no point in making goals without envisioning some kind of strategy to get there. Determine what you need to change and make that change! With a new year comes a fresh start! Time to get on the ball early! I've posted my goals above my desk as a little extra umph to get me to work harder on my school work and even wrap it up when I know I need to get some sleep! I'm ready to hit this year hard and get back into the groove!

Have you taken the time to outline some goals for your semester?

First Day of Classes!

Oh goodness we're at it again! First day of classes start today! My alarm went off right at 7:00 and I would be lying if I said I had the energy that I did on my first day of freshman year classes. It was rough. Despite my difficulty getting up this morning there are so many things to be excited about for this year. I'm living with a group of my best friends, Rush is gearing up, I am truly passionate about all of my extra-curricular activities that I'm involved in and I'm so excited about my classes. Really! Going into Junior year (WHAT?!) my classes are now focused around what I really do like. Oh the joys of growing old! But Marketing and Management have me pumped for this semester and that's something to be excited about on the first day!

I'm all about being 10 minutes early to class so this post is going to be a little short today because I gotta run! Here's to a great semester ahead!

Dying over Desks!

Here we go again! It's a new year, a new room, and a new desk! Freshman year the one thing I was so excited to decorate was my bed! Picking out the perfect bedding took all summer! Now that I'm rolling into this new school year, the one thing I'm obsessing over is… my desk! Maybe that says a little something about my focus now that it's my Junior year! Nevertheless, now I definitely know what I need in terms of work space and I'm really excited to get crackin'!

My ideal workspace is:
Organized and clear.
Simple and focused.
Inspirational but not cluttered.

I like having a large open desk to work at with all of my binders and textbooks organized neatly. A bright light is definitely a necessity as well as easy access to supplies like pens and pencils! With a different room this year I really want to stray away from the clutter that I kept on the shelves of my dorm desk the past few years. I want everything around me to be solely work. I'm on the lookout for a few prints to have against the wall that spark a little creativity but still keep the space focused and productive.

Here are some of the desks that I've been eyeing over at on Pinterest as my inspiration for this year!

What words would you use to describe your ideal desk?

An Elle Woods Packing Problem!

My goodness… every year I pull an "Elle Woods". I'm serious! I feel like I just have so much stuff here at school! After a summer of packing and unpacking I am Grade A burned out. Most of my dorm room is now neatly in place and, yes the majority is unpacked, but I am needing some serious motivation to finish these last few boxes. Here's to hoping my room is completely unpacked and organized by the end of the weekend!

Hey, a girl can dream.

Searching for the Perfect Wristlet!

So you're leaving the house, you get to the door and you go through the checklist:

1. keys
2. phone
3. ID
4. credit card
5. cash

Got it all? Sometimes it's a struggle after a hectic morning when you're running 10 minutes late but if you forget one of them, it's fatal. My solution? A wristlet. Talk about a go-to. It's definitely on my recommendations for back-to-school purchases, especially for college girls! A wristlet really keeps it all together whether you're throwing it in your backpack for a day of classes or grabbing it to head to the gym! All the necessities, right there, no hassle. Now that's what I'm talking about!

Here are some of the perfect wristlets on my radar for this school year!

Wonderful Wristlets

Which one of these wristlets are you loving?!

The Move-In Playlist!

Ladies, today I'm movin' in! As exciting as it always sounds, the work is always a lot less so. Moving boxes packed way too full, putting together some ikea furniture and positioning the clunky dorm furniture is always hard work! So how do I get through it? Crank some tunes! I put together a playlist that's going to be getting me and my family through this grueling day. All of these songs have a strong beat to keep me productive and positive throughout the day!

You can listen to my playlist {here on Spotify} and download it to play on your big day! Good luck on all of your all's move ins!

Back to School: Pack it or Tote it?

Pack It or Tote It?

Whew! Can you believe it? It's time to go back to school! Time to pack up your new bedding, that overflowing box of frames, time to convince your Mom that you really need to bring all 50 pairs of shoes and time to try to squeeze in that last suitcase of t-shirts into your overflowing trunk. So while you're packing all of these obviously necessary essentials don't forget one of the most important things you're going to need at school… something to carry all those books! Whether you're running to class or running to the gym you're going to need something thrown over your shoulder and why not do it in style? Each of these options have that perfect balance between practical and cute! Now all you have to decide is do you want to pack it or tote it?

Personally, I have a few totes at school as well as my trusty backpack. I love having my {LL.Bean backpackfor those rainy days when I'm lugging way too many books to the library for a long night. I've had it since high school and it's held up all these years however I am eyeing some of these {Herschel Supply Backpacks}! While I always have my backpack stored away for large book hauls, I like to change it up for classes. One of my absolute favorite totes is an embroidered {LL.Bean totehat I got as a gift from my sorority Big! It feels especially scholastic and the sturdy sides can keep their shape even under the weight of my laptop! I also keep an assortment of Large {Longchamp Le Pliage'sbecause they're my ultimate go-to! Their simple colors can go with any style and they're also super easy to clean (big plus)! For some other options to carry your books in style, that would look even better with personalized embroidery, check out {this adorable backpack} and {this preppy tote} from Marley Lilly! (Girls, keep these in mind for sorority gifts!) How cute are they?!

You definitely don't have to sacrifice your style with these practical yet stylish backpacks and totes, so what's your style? Do you pack it or tote it? What do you plan on lugging your books to and from the library in this semester?
